Brief interventions

Brief interventions (6-12 sessions)

There are some difficulties which can be helped by a very brief intervention.  This can be discussed during an initial assessment, but often a brief intervention of 6-12 sessions can be highly effective for:

– Under 5s / family work

– Children and young people whose main difficulty is anxiety / obsessional or compulsive difficulties, or children with difficulties in areas such as selective eating, difficulty sleeping, phobias and fears.

A brief intervention may be a mix of helping the child / young person think about what is underlying their difficulty (once the reasons are out in the open and can be spoken about, often the symptoms start to go away), and also strategies for helping a young person manage the difficulty (e.g. help to relax, go to sleep, get out of the house and get to school).  There may also be some work with parents to help think about situations where things get tricky at home and how to understand why the child / young person is acting the way they are, how they might be feeling and how best the parents / carers can help in these sorts of situations.
